The program is for young people ages 5-20 who are deaf, hard of hearing, or a child of a deaf adult. There is also a support group with speakers and activities for parents. The program is free of charge, but parents are responsible for transportation to and from the program. Teens with permission may travel on their own. Join them for the next session at 131 East 104th Street off Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. https://www.schools.nyc.gov/schools/M072
The program meets two Saturdays per month from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Participants are divided into groups by age and school grade so that they can make friends in the program and be involved in appropriate activities. Teens with permission may travel on their own. Children must bring lunch from home. Teens can bring lunch from home or money to purchase lunch; however, lunch from home is mandatory on trip days.
“Children participate in a variety of activities including arts & crafts, cooking, games, and educational workshops. Teens are involved with peer intervention workshops, dance lessons, sports, and community service projects. One Saturday each month, children and teens enjoy field trips to cultural and recreational activities, including bowling, miniature-golf, apple picking, ASL interpreted theater performances, museum visits, and sporting events. While staff members coach and encourage participants in every activity, there is an expectation that all participants will be able to follow the rules for their program and age group.
Our staff includes deaf and hearing individuals experienced in working with deaf young people. They are proficient in American Sign Language and spoken English. Each child’s mode of communication is celebrated and recognized here. If you have any questions please feel free to email Jaime Merola JMerola@childrensaidnyc.org or Cassandra Worko CWorko@childrensaidsnyc.org
If you are interested in enrolling your child please bring your student’s health record and we can help you complete the application form. Newcomers to the program may be interviewed by a senior staff member or participate on a trial basis for one or two sessions to ensure a good fit. We look forward to seeing you at the Saturday Program.”
