The current “dismantling” of the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) raises questions about how students with disabilities in NY will be impacted and how the NY State Education Department (NYSED) will navigate these changes. Join NYSED’s Christopher Suriano, Associate Commissioner of Special Education, and Judy Swierczewski, Esq. to learn more about the potential effects of a USDOE closure.
Topics include: • What role does the USDOE play in the availability, delivery, and quality of special education in New York? • What is NYSED’s role in relation to the USDOE in special education? • How would downsizing or closing the USDOE impact NY students with disabilities and their access to services, accommodations, and rights protections? • Will NYSED take on some of the functions the USDOE plays? • Who will be accountable for ensuring a student receives a free appropriate public education (FAPE)?
